BIMblogi: creativity transfer from sketch paper to a BIM tool

Written by Frode Saltkjelvik | 01 April 2022

For architects, the sketch and concept phase is the holy grail, where creativity can flood freely. But many people have to use several different data tools on the way to the finished building, which makes the process unnecessarily difficult.

It is easy to let creativity flow on the sketch paper. There you can knead and visualize every little detail, just as you see it with your inner eye. You can achieve almost everything, when you have a pencil in your hand. But then other disciplines must be involved. The idea must be realized according to the requirements of the civil engineer and legislation.

The solution to the creative problem

Other disciplines are now much earlier involved in your projects than it was common only a few years ago, and there are requirements for the use of BIM. It is a prerequisite for you as an architect to collaborate well with other disciplines. Your drawings must be turned into virtual reality using a BIM (Building Information Modeling) tool much earlier in the process. Your idea must be turned into something concrete. But unfortunately, you find that the tools you have to use limit your creativity. The solution? Choose a BIM tool developed according to the needs of architects.

When the tool is developed by architects for architects, the path from sketch and concept to a BIM model is both easier and faster. Most of our customers choose to use Archicad from A to Z. Then you need only one solution when heading to the world of BIM. The BIM tool does not have to be a straitjacket for creativity.

Different disciplines need different tools

Civil engineers have tools that suit them. Architects deserve the same privilege. The disciplines have a different starting point for their work process. Architects start with cardboard and plasticine. Only the imagination sets limits. While the civil engineers relate to physical laws and their restrictions. It is illogical that these two disciplines benefit from the same tool.

A spade is actually not a spade. There are many different versions of shovels used for different purposes. You do not want to use a snow shovel when planting a bush? Both when building a house, designing and planning, you need to have a tool that adapts to the task you need to perform.

If both the architects and the structural engineers are allowed to use their tailored tools, the process will be far more efficient. The consequence is increased quality throughout the whole project. The prerequisite is, of course, that the tools can communicate with each other by using open standards and have good support for this.

A tool developed by architects for architects

Our architects have developed Archicad – a BIM tool that provides greater opportunities through all phases of a construction project, not just during the creative phase. It has been developed based on the needs of architects, but uses open standards towards most engineering tools and additionally supports over 40 file formats. Archicad is currently used in some of the world's largest BIM projects. This is largely due to its unique, innovative technology and the ability to create the necessary documentation.

You save an enormous amount of time when the projects should be documented, because Archicad has Finnish design templates for architects integrated into the tool. This frees up time for the really important tasks: creative design. Since the tool was developed by and for architects, it is also much more intuitive and easy to use for this group of professionals.

You safe time and money by changing tools

There is no reason to fear that the actual process of changing tools will lead to delays in the projects you are already working on. Switching from the BIM tool you use to Archicad is much easier than you think. Nordic BIM Group has been through the same process hundreds of times before. We have a proven implementation plan, where we commit to reserve enough time to follow up. As a supplier, we provide not only the software, but also the expertise. We have good training courses that enable you to use the new tool already after a short time. The big time thief is to continue using the same inefficient tools you use today.

  • Do you dream of using more of your creativity as an architect every day?
  • Do you feel that you are working against the clock and do not have time to create good solutions and architectural quality?
  • Do you want to have time to participate in creative architectural competitions, instead of spending time on heavy work processes and expensive tools?

If you answered yes to one or more of these questions, you should contact us as Nordic BIM Group!
